Agave tequilana 'Lemeno' (Variegated Tequila Agave) - A medium large agave that grows to 5-6 feet tall with an open form rosette of long thin slightly concave gray-green leaves that have a narrow yellow variegation along the margins and are armored along these margins with small, sharp spines.
Plant in full sun in a well-drained soil and irrigate very little. This plant needs to be grown where temperatures do not drop below 25°F or even below 27°F for extended periods, so it is likely limited to southern California coastal areas or the low desert.
Agave tequilana is species that is used as the base ingredient of the distilled spirit tequila in Mexico and it is the select form often called Weber's Blue Tequila Agave, Agave tequilana Weberi or Agave tequilana var. azul that is considered the best for these purposes – see our listing of Agave tequilana var. azul for more information about this variety.
Agave tequilana 'Lemeno' was likely a sport from Weber's Blue Tequila Agave and is considered to be one of this plants closest clones, so also useful in making distilled agave spirits. It differs from Weber's Blue Tequila Agave in having a more open habit with fewer leaves that are 4 to 8 inches shorter but produces a the basal mass, the pina that is about the same size.
