Dianella revoluta Little Rev ['DR5000'] PP17,719 (Little Rev Flax Lily) - A compact clumping (with short rhizomes) evergreen perennial growing to 2-3 feet tall and spreading slowly outwards. It has ¼ to ½ inch wide foliage that is a yellow green on the upper surface and a blue green on the more visible lower surface that is held in uniform upright fans. In spring into summer appear the nearly 3-foot-tall inflorescences that rise above the tips of the foliage bearing deep violet blue flowers.
Plant in full sun to moderate shade in most any well-draining soil and irrigate regularly to only occasionally once established. Trials have indicated that this plant tolerates high inland temperatures and moderately dry conditions. In trials it has proven undamaged to temperatures down to 21 F and further tests are being conducted to determine how much lower temperatures this plant can tolerate. Little Rev can be planted near the beach as it also tolerates salt spray, and it is fairly maintenance free but benefits from a trim down to 2 inches above the ground every 2 to 3 years and removal of older lower leaves annually – these tasks best performed in fall to early spring. A great plant for an accent planting or used in mass planting in low-irrigated locations. Plant 18 to 24 inches on center for mass plantings.
Dianella revoluta is widely distributed throughout the south of all of the Australia states except Northern Territories and grows in extremely variable conditions but mostly Eucalyptus forests. It is commonly known as blueberry lily, blue flax-lily, black anther flax-lily or spreading flax-lily. The genus is named after Diana, the Roman goddess, of hunting and Queen of the woods and the specific epithet is from the Latin word 'revolute' in reference to the in-rolled margins of the leaves.
Dianella revoluta Little Rev was originally described as growing to 14-18 inches tall but it has grown taller than this in California gardens with the tallest plants approaching 3 feet in height (we like to say it got "all revved up!"). The plant was discovered in 1996 in Clarendon, New South Wales, Australia, during a seedling selection from seeds off of the unpatented Dianella revoluta 'DR4000' received US Plant Patent PP17,719 in May 2007. It was introduced in the United States by VersaScapes of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and is now marketed by Dig Plants, Inc. We have grown this outstanding plant since 2008.
