Hippuris vulgaris (Aquatic) (Mare's Tail) - Spreads by creeping rhizomes with upright stems that reach 6 to 12 inches tall that have hair-like leaves that radiate horizontally, much like a bottle cleaner brush. The white summer-blooming flowers are small and are barely visible to the naked eye. Grows quickly in full sun to part shade. Tolerates very cold climates - hardy down to USDA Zone 4 and is easily propagated by divisions or stem cuttings. Perfect choice for a marginal or can be submerged in an aquarium. Has a similar appearance to Parrot's Feather, Myriophyllum aquaticum but is more upright. The name for the genus comes from the Greek word 'ippouris' (or hippouris) which means "horse-tailed" and the specific epithet is from the Latin word for "ordinary" or "common".
This information about Hippuris vulgaris (Aquatic) displayed on this web page is based on research we have conducted in our horticultural library and from reliable online resources. We also will relate observations we have made about it as it grows in our nursery gardens and other gardens visited, as well how our crops have performed in containers in the nursery field. Where appropriate, we will also incorporate comments that we receive from others and we welcome hearing from anyone with additional information, particularly if they can share cultural information that would aid others in growing this plant.
