Cordyline australis Pink Passion ['Seipin'] PP 19,927 -A palm-like small tree that grows with an upright habit and with age will branch to produce several heads. This cultivar is a very showy sport of Cordyline australis 'Red Star' with clusters of arching, sword-like leaves that are a startling dark grayish purple color with bold neon pink leaf margins. Though most sources list it as growing considerably smaller (under 6 feet), like its parent this Cordyline is likely to grow in our climate to be a branched 10 to 20 foot tall by 5 to 10 foot wide evergreen tree and produce large panicles of small, sweet-scented white flowers in late spring to summer. Best here in full coastal sun to light shade - some shade protection necessary in hotter inland gardens. It should prove drought tolerant in coastal gardens but responding well to occasional to regular irrigation and tolerant of coastal conditions, if protected from direct sea winds (Zone 2). Likely hardy to around 15° F, growing well in USDA zones 9-10 (and possibly warmer Zone 8 locations). A fun plant for adding an exciting colorful tropical look (has been described as "a rather a startling color") to the drier mediterranean climate garden - use as a feature specimen or in a decorative pot. This plant is described as a naturally-occurring chimera mutation of Cordyline australis 'Red Star' that was discovered by Paul Hummel in a micropropagation (tissue culture) lab in Lancashire, England in 2002 and was introduced by Hummel's nursery, Seiont Nurseries located in the Caernarfon community of the Wesh port city of Gwynedd (UK). Under the cultivar name 'Seipin' this plant received protection under Plant Varieties Rights in Europe in 2007 (PVR EU2007/1292) , Plant Breeders Rights in Australia in 2010 (2010/242) and U.S. Plant Patent PP19,927 in April 2009. In Australian this plant was introduced by Touch of Class Nursery with a $.20 royalty on each plant sold going to the Australian National Breast Cancer Foundation. We have been trying to get this plant since we first saw pictures of in in 2009 and are happy to finally be adding it to our product mix in 2015.
