Phormium plants can suffer from damaging insects, especially from insects in the order Homoptera. The common long tailed mealy bug can cause a crinkle in a leaf much like an accordion. Although this is unsightly, it is easy to control by soaps or with predatory beneficial insects. More damaging and difficult to control is a related insect, New Zealand Flax Mealybug.
