Dendrocalamus asper (Giant Burmese Timber Bamboo) - Large bamboo that can reach to 60 (100) feet with culms to 8 inch wide culms. Plant in full sun. Moderate water needs. Grows to 100' tall in native habitat. If given favorable conditions this extremely tall bamboo will grow quite rapidly producing several new culms each year in late summer. Culms are hardy to 15-20 F and clump to around 10 F but plants will defoliate much below 25 F. From Burma & Java. Large shoots are highest quality for food. We grew this big bamboo from 2002 until 2008 and still have large plants in the garden.  This description is based on our research and observations made of this plant as it grows in our nursery, in the nursery garden and in other gardens that we have visited. We will also incorporate comments received from others and always appreciate getting feedback of any kind from those who have some additional information about this plant, in particular if this information is contrary to what we have written or if they have additional cultural tips that would aid others in growing Dendrocalamus asper.
