Clematis montana var. rubens (Anemone Clematis) - This deciduous vine holds crimson colored new growth which matures to a bronzy green color. Fragrant, pink, anemone-like flowers cover the plant profusely in the spring. It is a vigorous vine that can grow to 20 feet.
Does best in the sun or light shade with moderate water and is cold hardy to below 0 degrees F and useful in USDA Zone 6 and above. This plant appreciates a cool root run with stems growing up into the sun so best with the base of the plant and its roots shaded. It is attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Clematis montana is native to mountain areas of Asia from Afghanistan to Taiwan. The genus name is from Ancient Greek 'clématis' which was the name for a climbing plant and may have as a root the Greek word 'klema' which means "a twig" or "a branch". The specific epithet given this plant refers to the plant coming from a mountainous area.
This was one of the first Clematis that we grew and we listed it in our 1982 to 2002 catalogs.
