Leucadendron platyspermum (Platystar) - This cutting grown selection grows to 5 feet tall with narrow leathery yellow-green-colored leaves. In spring appear the female flowers surrounded by bright yellow-green bracts and later by the very decorative rounded wooden cones. These cones, held atop stems clad in the yellow-green foliage are what are sold in the flowers market as Platystar. The male plants are shorter and have narrower leaves.
Plant in full sun in well-draining soil. Avoid phosphorus fertilizers. We received this plant mixed in with a shipment of other plants and do not know its ultimate hardiness - if anyone has grown it in California please let us know as we would like to know more about it.
Leucadendron platyspermum is a plant from low lying areas of Bredasdorp and Caledon in South Africa. We first received this plant from Steve Terrando of Terando Rosa Nursery in Camarillo, California and we grew and sold it for on year only in 2005.
