Eomecon chionantha (Snow Poppy) - An herbaceous perennial from eastern China which spreads quickly by rhizomes (occasionally seeds out) making a low groundcover 16 inches high. In early spring charming crystalline white poppy-like flowers appear just above the lovely oval leaves with scalloped edges. The pure white, 4-petaled, 2" wide flowers are centered with bright golden-yellow stamens. Likes moist, well-drained soil in morning sun or light shade. Cold hardy to 15° F. Also known as Chinese bloodroot. The scientific name comes from the Greek 'eos' (dawn; east) and 'mekon' (poppy), referring to the Far East origin of the genus while 'chionantha' is also Greek ('chion' (snow) 'anthos' (a flower), referring to the white flowers). We grew this charming plant from 2003 until 2008.
