Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic' (Black Taro) - This beautiful tropical perennial grows 4-5 ft tall with dark burgundy stems with large (to 2 feet long) elephant-ear-shaped green leaves with red veins which mature to a dusty charcoal-black color and then fade to a dull purple late in the season. This is a great plant for tropical or aquatic gardens in full sun to part shade. It can be grown in shallow water. It does best when it is fertilized on a regular basis. It is root hardy to 0° F. This is a Taro relative - All parts of Taro are poisonous, so the roots and leaves must be cooked properly before being eaten. Even if eaten when only partially cooked, it will burn the throat.
