Phormium 'Amazing Red' (Amazing Red New Zealand Flax) - A New Zealand Flax cultivar with narrow dark, reddish-brown leaves that grows to only 18-24 inches tall.
Can tolerate fairly dry conditions (coastal) but looks best with occasional to regular irrigation. Cold hardy to 15-20° F and possibly root hardy below these temperatures but with severe foliage damage unless protected. Looks quite a bit like 'Monrovia Red' but the habit is more rigidly upright, and the leaves are narrower and shorter. A good container plant that combines well with fine textured gray plants.
A fairly new cultivar from a South African nursery. We found this plant not so amazing and discontinued growing it in 2003.
