Pimelea ferruginea 'Bonne Petite' (Rice Flower) - Erect stems on this 2 foot tall evergreen bush hold small oval opposite leaves. In the summer, clusters of pink flowers bloom at terminal ends of the branches. Best in full sun in a very well drained soil with occasional to infrequent irrigation watering but can grow in partial shade and irrigated more often if soil drainage is good. Hardy to 25F. An attractive container or garden plant. It is native to coastal areas of southwest Western Australia where it often can be found on coastal sands. The name for the genus is derived from the Greek word 'pimele' meaning "soft fat" which is thought to refer to the oily seeds or the fleshy cotyledons and the specific epithet means "rust coloured". This is a very attractive plant that we grew from 1989 until 1993 – works in the garden if you have very good drainage and don’t expect them it to live too long.
