Anemopsis californica (Aquatic) (Yerba Mansa) - A California native rhizomatous perennial with large basal leaves that grow to 1 foot tall. From spring to fall appear the cone shaped flowers that are subtended by white bracts. Plant in moist areas or even in saturated soil up to 6". Once established it can run about in the garden if soil is moist. Will grow in full sun to partial shade. Cold hardy to 15-20 degrees F. Bark and roots were widely used medicinally by native Americans. We grew this plant since 1990 but discontinued growing it in 2008.
This description is based on our research and observations made of this plant as it grows in our nursery, in the nursery garden and in other gardens that we have visited. We also try to incorporate comments received from others and appreciate getting feedback of any kind from those who have additional information about this plant, particularly if they disagree with what we have written or if they have additional cultural tips that would aid others in growing Anemopsis californica.
