Alocasia macrorrhizos (Upright Giant Taro) - A water loving plant growing to 7 feet tall and 4 feet wide in most gardens. This rhizome perennial has fleshy thick leaf stalks that are topped with large (2 feet or longer) upright arrow-shaped, wavy-edged bright green leaves. Individual plants can reach 4 feet across. A greenish white calla-like flower followed by reddish fruit appear on the plant at maturity. Grows best in filtered sun with even moisture. Evergreen to 30° F and listed as some as root hardy to nearly 0° F though we haven't been able to test this ourselves!. This plant is often confused with or identified as the very similar Alocasia odora.
The description above is based on our research and observations of this plant growing in our nursery and in our own and other Santa Barbara gardens. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who has additional information or disagrees with what we have written.
