Ornithogalum thyrsoides (Chinkerinchee) - Two inch wide and one foot long tapered leaves emerge form this South African bulb. Dense pyramidal flower clusters of white flowers with a darker eye are carried on 1 to 2 foot tall stalks in the spring. Plant in full sun and irrigate only in the absence of winter rains, allowing plants to go dry in late spring and summer. Cut flowers last a long time. Off season bloom from plants first year flowering grown from seed. The common name is in reference to the sound the dry plants make when the wind blows through the dried flowers. The common name is variously spelled Chinkerinchee and Chincherinchee but in most reputable South Africanbulb books the spelling is Chinkerinchee.
The description above is based on our research and observations of this plant growing in our nursery, in our own garden and in other gardens in the Santa Barbara area. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who has additional information about this plant, even if they disagree with what we have written.
