Encephalartos horridus (Spiny Kafirbread) - This small cycad has 18-24" long recurving leaves that have many intertwined spiny, silvery-blue leaflets that emerge from a partly subterranean trunk. The male plants produce narrow 1 foot long cones. It has low water requirements and tolerates frost - probably is cold hardy to 25-30 degrees F. Its native habitat is on exposed slopes in Mozambique, Swaziland, and northern Natal and Transvaal provinces of South Africa.  This description is based on research and observations of this plant as it grows in our nursery, in our nursery garden and in other gardens that we visit. We also incorporate comments received and appreciate getting feedback of any kind from those who have any additional information about this plant, particularly if they disagree with what we have written or if they have additional cultural tips that would aid others in growing Encephalartos horridus.
