Erythrina humeana (Natal Coral Tree) - This is a deciduous variety that comes from South Africa. The 30 foot tree produces orange-red flowers which bloom in late summer through fall on flower stalks that reach out and above foliage, making the flowers even more visible. It prefers full sun and occasional deep watering. It is hardy to about 25 degrees F. We grew this plant for many years and still have a nice specimen in front of the nursery along San Marcos Rd next to the neighboring telephone company building. While this plant is incredibly attractive when in bloom, we have noted the foliage is often infested with wooly whitefly, aphids and mealybug followed by unsightly sooty mold, which gives the foliage a blackish gray appearance..
The description above is based on our research and observations of this plant growing in our nursery, in our own garden and in other gardens in the Santa Barbara area. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who has additional information about this plant, even if they disagree with what we have written.
