Erythrina falcata (Evergreen Coral Tree) - This is a mostly evergreen tree that only drops some of its leaves at flowering time in the late winter to early spring. The flowers on this selection are a deep red and bloom on spikes at the ends of the branches. It is the largest of the corral trees grown in Califonai and is erect to 30-50 feet tall. It prefers full sun and deep watering. It is hardy to 20 degrees F. We have a very large specimen tree of this species in front of our nursery along Hollister Ave. We discontinued growing this plant primarily because it is too large for most landscapes and is more difficult to vegetatively propagate than other Coral Trees and seed grown plants do not bloom for many years.
The description above is based on our research and observations of this plant growing in our nursery, in our own garden and in other gardens in the Santa Barbara area. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who has additional information about this plant, even if they disagree with what we have written.
