Cussonia paniculata var. sinuata (Mountain Cabbage Tree) - This small evergreen tree from South Africa has glaucous palmate leaves, which are divided into 8-12 long leaflets that are deeply lobed. These leaves are held on long (10-12 inches) leaf petioles. The small yellow flowers are tightly arranged on spikes. It appreciates well-draining soil. Moderate grower reaching about 10-15' tall and is hardy to 20-25 degrees F. Plants went undamaged in our nursery garden during the 1990 freeze with tempertures to 18° F.
The description above is based on our research and observations of this plant growing in our nursery, in our own garden and in other gardens in the Santa Barbara area. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who has additional information about this plant, even if they disagree with what we have written.
